About the Maps
Q. When was the first broadband map produced?
A. The first generation map was published in January 2009.
Q. How was the first map prepared?
A. Connect Arkansas gathered information directly from broadband internet providers at a high level, general view. We had providers mark where their coverage was on the state map, without much detail. The first generation map represents the data collected at that time.
Q. How many broadband providers were represented on the first map?
A. 50 percent of all providers in Arkansas gave Connect data in 2009.
Q. How many broadband providers are there in Arkansas?
A. Connect Arkansas has identified 63 service providers in the state. Note: resellers are not included in these numbers due to National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA) for broadband mapping data collection.
Q. How many service providers are represented on the second map?
A. Eighty-six percent of service providers identified are represented.
Q. What kind of providers technologies are represented on the second generation map?
- Wireline: Cable, DSL and Fiber
- Fixed-Wireless
- Mobile Wireless
- Satellite
Q. After producing the first broadband map, what were the next steps for Connect Arkansas on mapping?
A. From January 2009 until today, the map evolved as Connect added broadband provider data. Our Geographical Information Systems (GIS) analysts worked closely with broadband providers to request the necessary data for a much more robust and detailed map, as required by the NTIA. Connect developed specific parameters for the types of coverage collected and maintained constant contact with providers throughout the mapping process to ensure consistent data quality.
Q. What does the new map reflect?
A. The new map gives Arkansas a highly detailed view of where broadband service is available, and by extension, where broadband is not available, in the state. Wireline data is compiled at the Census block and street level. (A Census block is the smallest demographic area as defined by the Census Bureau in which population information is collected.)
Q. As a consumer, how can I tell if I have broadband access at my house?
A. Connect Arkansas will be launching a web-based, interactive version of its broadband map that is searchable by address and will list providers in that area. This will available for view on www.connect-arkansas.org in Fall 2010. This map will display coverage and broadband speeds.
Q. What if I don’t have broadband access and the Connect map says that I do?
A. Connect recommends you go to our website and click on the “Broadband is not available to me yet” form. We will use your information to validate provider supplied data regarding current broadband access.
Q. If I don’t have broadband access now, how do I get it?
A. Connect Arkansas recommends that you contact your local service provider to inquire about getting broadband in your area.
Q. Will the map be updated regularly?
A. The Arkansas broadband map will be updated regularly and posted on the Connect website.
